Flying with a Toddler

Over the years I have traveled back and forth to California to see my family and my friends.  I try to make it back at least once a year, if not more.  It really isn’t that bad of a flight- about 6 hours if you are able to fly direct.  If you are able to fly Jet Blue you can easily spend 6 hours catching up on housewives or top model, or some other really important television broadcast.

This year we fly to the holidays and with our gulp 2 and 1/2 year old.

I am prepping not only with what to bring, but also with what to say, how to say it, building up a list of tricks up my sleeve to make it through the confined space of 6 hours on the plane.

I have searched the internet and spoken to friends about how to make it through.  Like everything with our son I am sure the thought will be worse then the experience itself, and we will all be just fine.  BUT, I am still at the thought stage and still in the planning stage so bare with me a bit.

I have snacks, lollipops, some new games and toys (to bring out at timed moments, if needed)… I have my breathing techniques, a smile and a warm hug (to hold him tight, if needed)… I have spoons and napkins and diapers and wipes (please god don’t let that be needed en flight).  I have patience, um pattttieenncee – yes please lord grant me patience.  I am in real need of that this time of year.

I think my check list is complete.  I am going to rank it as so:

1)  PATIENCE

2)  lollipops

3)  relaxation techniques

4)  juice

5)  a warm reassuring smile and hug

Ok I think we are ready to fly with our toddler…wish us luck!

I am also flying to California with my 2 1/5 year old soon. We flew in August and it was fine. He loved having is own kid sized headphones. Extra snacks saved us because of course he didn’t want what the airline gave out.
