Just another Nice Winter Day

The weather this year in New England has been something else.  Yesterday was one of the coldest days, and the low with wind chill might have brushed 28-30 degrees.  To be honest it was refreshing and it felt good to let myself feel the cold air of winter.

Thinking about winter, the 10 that I have spent living near and around Boston, I have never remembered a winter like this one.  The first year I lived in Boston it was horrid-states of emergency, black ice, and then there was little ol” me thinking my cardigans were sweaters. After that winter I fled back to the warmth of California, but only for a year.  Something about New England had grabbed a hold of me and I returned, this time embracing myself for the good and bad days.  Each year was a little different- each year a little worse.  Until this year.

This winter my cardigans have been a staple and sometimes not even that.  This year the only blizzard we a freak Halloween storm.  The real winter coats have stayed in the closet.  The snow pants, what are those?  Hats and gloves, only on Tommy- he thinks they are fun.

We have enjoyed our nice winter days by playing T-Ball outside, walking to a park, chasing our dog in the backyard….but somehow it seems wrong.  We should be sledding, building forts and throwing snow balls, shouldn’t we?  Isn’t this what I have been preparing for all of these years to embrace and accept the winter, knowing that the Spring, Summer and Fall will follow and I will have earned my nice weather.

I think there is absolutely nothing we can do about the weather and that is pretty comforting to us people.  For one reason or another this winter is warm and snow free, but next might be brutally cold with weekly blizzards, all part of the fun of calling New England your home sweet home.
