If you are like me you know that being prepared for a disaster is important and you probably think about it every now and then, but then there is no follow through. I am embarrassed to say that last year when Hurricane Irene was headed our way we were ill prepared. Our greatest concern was “what if the coffee maker does not work?!” Here is what I wrote last year on August 28, 2012….. We went to the store and this is what we returned with: diapers, hot tamales, candy, a box of Joe from Dunkin’s, and Dog Treats. I think we are ready, don’t you?
Pretty pathetic. Thanks to Hurricane Preparedness week pointing out what we should have to prepare and to even think about preparing to eat healthy during a disaster we have another chance to get things right around here. Everyday Health has put together shopping list, recipes, and more. I especially like that they thought to include meals for diabetics and for pregnancy. I honestly never thought about what you would really need to sustain yourself in the event that you were trapped in your home. The canned peas are not going to really work for days on end, I learned that you will also need protein to get you through- makes sense, I just never thought it through.
I hope you take this opportunity to prepare a little bit to protect yourself and your family. Here is the link to the very helpful article from Everyday Health.
