A Baby Shower Across the Miles via Skype

This past weekend my family embarked on embracing technology and saving on the high cost of airline tickets and had a baby shower via Skype.  We had the idea earlier this year to host a baby shower across the miles.

What does that mean you might ask?  Well let me tell you how we did it and then you can let me know if this is something you would ever plan for a family member or friend.

Gian and Stephen were at their home in California, having breakfast while we gathered family and friends at the future Grammy and Grampy’s house/the host and hostess in Massachusetts.  The guest started to arrive at noon, which is nine o’clock a.m.in California.

We had sent traditional invitations from Tiny Prints, with one non-traditional twist guest were asked to send their presents to the guest of honor’s home or the babiesrus by their home for them to pick-up.

We had appetizers, including my Pretty in Pink Deviled Eggs, dips, cheese and crackers.. as our guest of honors had breakfast and were settling in to the party watching us on their computer screen.

We had a good time talking about life, babies, even though she was 3,000 miles away at the comfort of her own home.

When it was time to open the gifts we all gathered and watched Gian open her gifts… the same ooing and awwwing that would occur at a traditional baby shower took place, but there was no gift wrap to clean up.

All in all it was a very traditional baby shower. Invitations were sent, we all had a good time catching up and sharing some laughs with some amazing women, there were gifts for the mommy and daddy to be, a nice lunch and a beautiful cake.  The only thing we missed was giving the mom to be a big hug and wishing her well…well we gave virtual hugs instead.

OH yay during the party we also had a big reveal of the babies name as Stephen and Gian moved the lap top into the nursery and showed everyone the letters one by one.  The name reveal, of Audrey, brought cheers that I am sure could be heard all the way in California.

I can’t wait to meet you Audrey, my niece, you are already a very LOVED little girl.

Things sure change with advances in technology! Programs like Skype are great for families that live far away, long distance relationships and especially military families! It’s always nice to see technology bring ppl together (I work in an ITS department :) )!

My cousin had a similar shower a couple months ago! It was a cyber shower over the net… and I think they too used Skype. She lives in CA and everyone else lives in KS or on the East Coast. Guess it was a success… although I didn’t get to participate! Technology is pretty cool. :)

So neat! I love that we can stay connected this way and see people even though they are far away ;)
